As I Dash

Just a quick note as I dash off to bed. Gee, I hope that pot of coffee that I just polished off doesn't keep me awake.

Tonight I checked out one of the two teams I am on with Etsy sellers, the "Trad-a-holics" team.  I can't believe the beautiful stuff I saw! Jewelry, clothing, antiques, card...you name it. I think it must be on Etsy.

All I will do tonight is post a photo here of my latest  Etsy listing, then I'm calling it a night. Must write more tomorrow when I perform surgery on a skirt and a tank top. Navy is supposed to be a big color this spring.  For my sake I hope that it is.

Pick a Name, Pick a Flower

As I sat uplisting a new item to etsy.com, I received a lightening bolt of an idea.
I've been having a ball, crocheting flowers with cotton thread. Isn't it funny, we are drawn to just about any type of flower. Make a flower out of newspaper and chances are, someone will admire it "OH how cute." LOL.

Anyway, I finally found a name for my line of upcycled t shirts.  Is it a good one? I don't know, but I'm sticking to it.  "Special Tees."

So today I put up an orange tank which features a nice-sized thread flower in yellow with two green leaves.  Now I will log off to work on a turquoise tee shirt.

Make a Dressform Cover or "My First Dressform"

Picked up a dressform yesterday. Finally! I've wanted one for over 30 years. I will only say that sometimes family members need to keep their thoughts to themselves.

My dressform is a Singer 150. She's red and she's the smaller of the two like this one they make. The larger one is gray.

Truth be told, I would prefer a neutral (gray, black or brown) dressform mannequin but after 30 years, I won't waste time complaining. I planned to get over this tiny thing until I put a sleeveless top on this gal and the red arm could not be ignored.

The net is my teacher LOL. I spend  twenty minutes read what other women have done to cover their dressform. Some started with  flesh-colored jersey (no money). Others cut up a t-shirt and cut off the arms. Followed by forming a new sleeve. Seems like too much work to me.

If I can't find a dance leotard or any clothing with the same shape as a dressform, then I want something different. And the something different that I came up with was jog/sleep pants. Now my sleep pants are black, thin with wide, wide legs. And guess what? The leg is a tube, similar to the shape of the dressform.  I cut down from the front of the elastic waistband, about two/three inches over to the other side (past center seam) and cut up to the back waistband.

At the neck I used the pants hem. For the hips I used the waistband. You can see the hem was stitched in white thread.

Funny how in a way, the pants leg almost mimicked the form.  The top photo shows neither shoulder sewn. The second photo shows that I've sewn the right shoulder. Just a procecss of pulling, pinning and handstitching. This particular form has only a slight amount of padding; pins must go sideways and not through the body. Not a helpful feature for actually "drapping or designing" on the form, like I would like to do. But I'm still not complaining lol. This form is just the first of my collection.

The leg side seam fit the form so well, I didn't need to sew that area at all. I pulled up the pants leg over the neck. Color may get in the way of display items and the neck was red.  After sewing as high as the leg would go, I cut a strip of the other leg, wrapped it like an Ace bandage and sewed it down. Looks a bit like the turtle necks I fight my Mother for wearing. That's another story.

Interesting how the crotch area that I cut and fitted over the left buttocks, mimics the shape of a leg on  high cut panties or a swimsuit.  But I digress. This next part, the hips is my least favorite part.

Singer 150 does not have much "body" to her. She's made of ligh weight, thin plastic and hence is difficult to get a good hold on. You may need a friend to hold her in their lap as you sew your pinned areas; especially inside the bottom edges.  I threaded a needle with very long thread and commenced sewing as best I could, an area hard to reach and impossible to see. Eventually, probably sooner than I like, I may need to finish this area another way. Because I am eager to get my Etsy clothes displayed properly, I  will worry about that  situation when the time comes.
More photos to come. I'm experiencing internet difficulties.

My Return

Yes, it's been awhile since I've written. At least I can say that I have been creating. So what, have I been creating?  you ask.

Well, besides quite a few messes, I've been working on a denim purse. Seems that I had more denim laying around gathering dust that I'd realized.
Ask and ye shall seek? LOL Apparently, it's true.

And then there is the half dozen more hats I've put on Etsy. I don't just want to sell crocheted items. But soon the weather will be warm and I will need to pack all this away. Sure like to off it now.

Every time I think I should be sewing, I'm picking out the newest hat to sell; or I'm making the flower for it. Next comes choosing the head that gets to be the lucky model and then there's the photo to take.

Here's a photo of the hat I offered on Etsy today. I decided to offer 20% through Valentines Day. Maybe that will get the ball rolling.

Can you hear me, silent Internet? Next time I'll see what I can blog about to make this more interesting.

PS: I'd like to thank my daughter for letting me use her cosmetology heads.  They have nice hair and they don't talk too much.

Valentines Around the Corner

Yesterday I was not very happy with my slow pace. I only made one item, an upcycled pink t - shirt made of 95% cotton and 5%  spandex which gives it a nice smooth feeling with a comfortable stretch.
The shirt measures 34 inches at the bust with a back neck length of 23.

The red heart is cut from another t - shirt and backed with a heat bond fabric. I handstitched around the heart and attached a black button to the center. At each side I embroidered an "X."  The heart patch reads as, "X O X." Pure love LOL.  To my eyes the pink is a nice soft hue, but from this side of my monitor, it appears washed out and faded.

Maybe a good time to consider taking photos in the day and in natural light.

New Project Finished

Ok, so I didn't work on the project that I wrote about in my last post. BUT I did start and finish a new project. What is it you ask? Well, it's a crocheted purse.  The purse was crocheted last year. And since I wasn't up to lining it, it just sat patiently on my sewing machine (the place where many projects go to die LOL), only this project lives and I think I did pretty good.

The lining I chose is a tan calico with tiny crimson flowers and tiny green leaves.  I've never lined a purse before.  An unlined crocheted purse is akin to buying a carton of milk with the bottom open; useless!

For decor, I crocheted a matching flower and attached a vintage mother of pearl button near the handle. And viola!  See the photo.

I hope to do other styles of purses in summer/spring colors as well.

Quick Check In

Just checking in to say, "Yes I am surprisingly still here." LOL
Currently, my ETSY shop, Darling and Daughters has seven items available;
two crocheted neck scarves, one vintage velvet hat, one hood/scarf combo and two Victorian capelets or capes.  Here's a pic of the hood/scarf. Got to get back to the grind! Hope to write more tonight.
